Pedals & Penang
We arrived in Malaysia in early January, compared to Laos the heat of the day was a challenge to cycle in (fortunately for us not quite as hot as Goa) so thank goodness for fellow bikers and their top notch electrolyte recommendations! Shout out to Passions Sportz Ventures for the expert advice and help reseating Kate’s tubeless tyre.
While it took us a minute to adjust to the heat, a swift ferry ride from Langkawi (more on why we landed there soon we promise) found us cycling south on quiet gravel coastal roads. Chatting and riding side by side through rice paddies full of wildlife provided a welcome change from the noise, dust and potholes of Laos.
Another short ferry ride from Butterworth found us riding into Penang, more specifically the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as George Town.
George Town is and it would seem, always has been, home to many cultures, faiths, collaborative business opportunities and very, very fortunately for us, culinary delights.
We had to force ourselves to leave the vintage hotels, fusion restaurants, micro-breweries and slightly bizarre cycle lanes behind and head back to the mainland but time already feels like it is running short on this trip and the highlands are calling.
